Mount Vernon Retreat

In the 1800's the humble Conewago Manor Farm was acquired by Iron Master Henry Bates Grubb. He added the stone mansion to the property and renamed his new home Mount Vernon Estate.

While Mr. Grubb served as Iron Master of Hopewell Forge, the Manor grew to several thousand acres in size. The remnants of his legacy can be seen by visiting the ruins of his blast furnace, known once as the Mount Vernon Furnace, which are located by the giant sycamore tree along the Conewago Creek.

Early deeds to the property preserve the rights for moving farm animals along the creek and for cutting ice for later use. Today you will often see deer in that same area, contentedly eating apples from the orchard trees. We hope that this retreat puts you in the same pastoral and reflective mood. This guest room shares a patio with Master Hagar’s Chambers.
